Suspect dies in police custody in New Jersey

VINELAND, N.J. (PIX11) — An investigation is underway after a suspect died in police custody in southern New Jersey, authorities said.

Officers arrested Phillip White, 32, about 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Grape Street, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor. They were responding to a call about a disorderly person.

White was “handcuffed and restrained” during his arrest then put into a squad car, the prosecutor said.

“At some point during transport, White became unresponsive and CPR was instituted by medical personnel,” Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said.

Officers reported that White appeared to be in respiratory distress, Webb-McRae said. He died at a hospital.

What happened between the time officers arrived and White’s entry into the hospital are under investigation, the prosecutor said. An autopsy is pending and White’s official cause of death has not yet been determined.
